Hosted vs Self-Hosted vs Headless

Hosted (SaaS) Platforms

Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, BigCommerce — you pay a monthly fee and the provider handles hosting, security, and software updates. Easiest to start, fastest to launch, but you're dependent on the provider's infrastructure and pricing decisions.

Self-Hosted Platforms

WooCommerce (WordPress plugin), Magento, PrestaShop — you download and install software on your own hosting. Maximum flexibility and no ongoing platform fees, but you're responsible for hosting, security, and maintenance.

Headless Commerce

The frontend (what customers see) is built separately from the backend (product management, cart, checkout). Maximum performance and flexibility — but requires significant technical resources. Not for most small businesses.

Key Factors to Evaluate

  1. Transaction fees. Some platforms (Shopify) charge a transaction fee on every sale if you don't use their payment processor. At scale, this adds up significantly.
  2. Product limit. Some plans cap how many products you can list. Check the limit on the plan you can afford.
  3. Payment gateways. Which payment processors are supported? Stripe, PayPal, and local payment methods matter depending on your target market.
  4. App ecosystem. What integrations and add-ons are available? Shopify's app store has 8,000+ apps; smaller platforms have fewer options.
  5. SEO capabilities. Can you customise URLs, meta tags, and structured data? Poor SEO capabilities will hurt your organic traffic long-term.
  6. Scalability. What happens when you hit 1,000 orders/day? Some platforms buckle under load; others handle it effortlessly.

Understanding Transaction Fees

Transaction Fee Reality Check

Shopify charges 0.5–2% transaction fees if you use a payment processor other than Shopify Payments. On $500,000 annual revenue, a 1% transaction fee = $5,000/year. Always calculate the true total cost of ownership, including transaction fees, app subscriptions, and theme costs — not just the monthly platform fee.
