What Is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It's the practice of improving your website so that it appears higher in search engine results pages (SERPs) β€” primarily Google β€” when people search for topics related to your business.

The fundamental logic: Google's job is to show the most useful, trustworthy result for every search query. SEO is the process of proving to Google that your page is the best answer to a specific question.

Why SEO Matters

The #1 result on Google gets approximately 30% of all clicks for that query. Position #2 gets about 15%. Position #10 gets under 2%. The difference between ranking 1st and 10th is the difference between hundreds of visitors per day and almost none β€” for the exact same amount of content.

How Search Engines Work

Google uses three main processes to deliver search results:

  1. Crawling: Google sends bots ("crawlers" or "spiders") across the internet to discover web pages. They follow links from page to page, mapping the web.
  2. Indexing: Discovered pages are analysed and stored in Google's index β€” a massive database of all the content on the web. If your page isn't indexed, it can't rank.
  3. Ranking: When someone searches, Google's algorithm scores every relevant indexed page against 200+ ranking factors and returns results in order of relevance and quality.

On-Page SEO Explained

On-page SEO refers to everything you control on your own page to improve its ranking potential. The key elements:

Off-Page SEO Explained

Off-page SEO refers to signals from outside your website that indicate your site's authority and trustworthiness. The most important off-page signal is backlinks β€” links from other websites pointing to yours.

Think of backlinks as votes of confidence. A link from a high-authority site like Forbes or a major university carries far more weight than a link from a random blog. Backlink quality matters more than quantity β€” 10 links from relevant, authoritative sites beat 1,000 links from spammy directories.

Technical SEO Basics

Technical SEO ensures that search engines can properly crawl, index, and understand your site. Key areas:

Where to Start

Don't try to do everything at once. Follow this priority order:

  1. Install Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 (both free)
  2. Make sure your site is mobile-friendly and loads fast
  3. Write at least one piece of content targeting a specific keyword your audience searches for
  4. Optimise your title tags and meta descriptions across existing pages
  5. Build internal links between related pages on your site
  6. Start acquiring backlinks through guest posts, directories, or PR

SEO is a long-term game. Most new sites take 3–6 months to see significant organic traffic from Google. The sites that win are the ones that publish consistently, build authority steadily, and don't give up after 30 days.

The right SEO tool makes this process significantly faster. We've reviewed the four major platforms below.
